60. HECTOR CHANGO Occultist, Mercenary, Killer
I always try to make the 60th figure in my home-made sets a preview for my next set. Dark Streets will be followed by Tropic of Fear, which focuses on Mexico and the Caribbean, so I thought a santeria-practicing occultist would be a good idea. On doing some research on santeria, the African/Catholic hybrid religion which originated on Cuba and spread throughout Latin America, I found that it is quite a benign religion, whose magic ceremonies focus on divination- hardly the stuff of horror movies that I was expecting. Still, I pushed foward, and came up with this monster. A Cuban-American who fell in with the City's Latino gangs, Hector Batista was tought the secrets of santeria by his grandfather from the old country, in hopes that it would lead him away from gang life. Hector didn't have much patience for the old man's teachings, however, and he decended further into gangsta life. Sent to prison for life for a drive-by shooting, Hector had plenty of time to remember the magic ceremonies his grandfather had tought him. He found that he had a talent for summoning the orishnas, the invisible divinities of santeria, and using them to do his bidding. Using his new-found occult abilities to escape from prison, Hector arrogantly changed his surname to "Chango", after the orishna who embodies thunder and masculine energy, and has set about taking over all of the City's Latino street gangs. The orishnas don't like being used for selfish purposes, however, and it is only a matter of time before they turn against him...
