58. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA Slasher, Mastermind, Legend
"...Suddenly, I felt a need to see beneath the mask. I wanted to know the face of the voice, and, with a movement which I was utterly unable to control, swiftly my fingers tore away the mask. Oh, horror, horror, horror!"
-Gaston Leroux, The Phantom Of The Opera As with Dracula, I have tried to avoid relying on the movies to adapt the Phantom, going instead to the source novel. Turns out, it's pretty awful! Still, the character of Erik the Opera Ghost is interesting: not a handsome man scarred by acid, as per most movie versions, Erik was actually born a hideous freak, with a skull-like face (noseless, with sunken eye sockets and a few stringy hairs), cadaverous skin, and yellow eyes that glow in the dark. To compensate for the handicap of his appearance, Erik has developed a genius intellect, but unfortunately not a moral compass: his two loves are music and torture...
